In the fall of 2012, I lead a group of students to take a community health project much further than required for the assignment regarding domestic violence in East County, San Diego. This assignment inspired us to make major changes and advancements in the concept of how domestic violence is addressed in the nursing profession. We created name tag badges to give to every student in the current SDSU nursing school and the next 7 semesters, creating a highly sustainable project. In addition, we met with SDSU nursing professors in 4/5 nursing school semsters, gave them an updated & evidence based powerpoint to present every semester (which they all agreed to). Consequently, many nurses already working in hospitals got word of our project and wanted badges for themselves (pictured below) so we created extra to hand out to professionals. Due to our hard work, in November or 2012 we were presented with a Certificate of Recognition from Senator Joel Anderson for our hardwork and dedication.
For 2 semesters I was a mentor to two first semester nursing students. I gave them advice and tips about classes, how to study for tests, their first day in the hospital and how to survive 5 semesters of intense nursing school while juggling other commitments. After creating a bond of trust, I continue to offer guidance and advice beyond their first semester and continuing to this day. I received a certificate of recognition from this SDSU organization.
